Deborah Dumka, craftsperson in residence in Gros Morne for the coming month, will present a two day product development workshop on Saturday, Feburary 28, and Sunday March 1 at the Woody Point Town Hall.
This workshop will use the technique of felting to translate an idea into a finished piece.
Here’s how Deborah describes her workshop:
Snapshot :: The feeling of a smooth pebble in your hand. The pattern of mottled tree bark. The ripples of a stone tossed into the ocean.
We each connect intimately with objects and scenes from our local environment and use them to make emotional shortcuts to the feelings that they bring out in us.How do we create a record of a moment, a trigger to a memory, a souvenir of the feeling?
This felting workshop will look at ways to define and refine an intuitive connection to a location or object from Nature. Participants are asked to bring an object (or a landscape photograph) that they are drawn to and find appealing. They will develop a vocabulary of colour and texture to describe and reflect the connection they feel to the object.
On Day 1 we will examine, describe and deconstruct the object using exercises in drawing, colour and word mapping.
On Day 2 participants will create 2-D or 3-D Snapshots using traditional wool felting.
Registration fee is $50, including lunch and materials. To register, contact Kris Oravec in Woody Point at or at 453-2043.
